Many college students will be taking their vehicles with them to college. It is estimated that about 70% of college students have their own vehicle or have access to one. While there are many considerations you as a parent need to make when deciding whether or not to allow your college student to take their vehicle with them, safety is always a big issue. Because of this, you want to make sure their vehicle runs properly should you decide to let them take it with them. Here are some tips for helping to get your college student's vehicle back-to-school ready.

Check Tire Pressure

Regardless of how far your college student plans to drive to get to their school, you want to check the tire pressure before they leave. Not only is it safer to do so, but it can also improve their gas mileage which can save you money. Experts suggest that properly inflated tires can improve your gas mileage by 3.3%. While this does not amount to huge savings, it can be helpful when your student gets on the road.

Schedule Service

Your college student will be busy with school, studying, and trying to maintain a social life. The last thing they are going to be worried about is when their vehicle is due for a checkup. In order to keep the vehicle running optimally, you want to make sure it doesn't miss the routine maintenance. To help avoid this, check to see what maintenance needs to be done on the vehicle before the student is planning to return home. By having these services done before they leave for college, you can avoid missing them. You may also want to go ahead and make appointments for other services during the times they will be home like fall break and holidays. These are the perfect times to get any maintenance services done.

Wash the Vehicle

With so much on your college student's plate, you cannot guarantee that they are going to stay on top of keeping the vehicle clean. By washing the vehicle before they leave, you are not only providing them with a great looking vehicle, but it can help preserve the finish on the vehicle. This means less chipping away of the paint over time.

Before your child leaves to go to college, you want to help find a service center in the college town that they can depend on should they have an emergency situation. In doing so, you could end up saving yourself a lot of time and money should the vehicle need servicing right away.
